Sage

“When we heard the news, our hearts dropped to the floor and our worlds stopped. We looked to the sky with so many questions, fear, anger, sorrow, grief, and mostly sadness. We expected the worst-I won’t even go there. What we didn’t expect and what has truly floored us is the enormous tide of overwhelming support that has carried us through this trying time. I’m reminded why I chose to raise my family in this community and what it truly means to be a friend. We are in a completely different place now than we were and still taking it one day at a time but we have a course and a plan and thanks to all of you and the competent staff at UCSF, we no longer have to worry about how we will provide Super Sage with the cape to conquer the kryptonite, we can just do it.”

Sage Nelson is a vibrant, silly and spunky 7 year old boy and anybody that knows him loves him.  A few days ago (September 2015) he was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma and has already begun his first chemo treatment at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.  The Nelson Family are some of the best people we know and they have dedicated their lives to teaching, coaching and grooming the youth of Benicia.  This came on quickly and as any person can imagine, it isn’t something you think will ever enter your “world”.  While they are on their new path they are going to need different forms of support from many different people (it takes a village). The road to recovery will be a long and hard one but Sage’s “can-do” attitude will get him there!

An update on Sage:
Sage’s numbers have been really good after the first small dose of chemo. They allowed us to take him home for a couple of nights & leaving the hospital felt very nice, especially after 8 days. He enjoyed seeing his brother, riding his bike and sleeping in his own bed. Tonight we pack for another round and this time it will be a little more intense. We will be there for a week or more depending on how he handles it. We will be keeping visitors to a minimum during this time as we know he will be tired and his immune system will be compromised. The staff at UCSF is top notch & our team of doctors and nurses are amazing and they all love #SuperSage. A GIANT thank you to all that support our family. The gifts, the donations and the love from our family, friends and community is undeniable.
