Ask Congress to #StepUp and Support More Funding for Childhood Cancer Research
History will be made June 24, 2014 when 250+ advocates come to Washington, D.C. for Childhood Cancer Action Day. You have an important role to play, whether you are standing with us on the Capitol steps or you are in your hometown.
Please lend your support by virtually urging Congress to help today’s children with cancer – and future generations – to support the FY2015 appropriations request of $5.26 billion for the National Cancer Institute and co-sponsor the bipartisan Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Reauthorization Act. Available funding for childhood cancer research is scarce and the pharmaceutical industry has yet to make a measurable investment in this area – so increased federal support is essential. For more background info on the funding issue, please see here.

This year alone, an estimated 15,780 children will be diagnosed with cancer in the U.S., and cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children in our country. In the last 10 years, funding of the NCI-supported Children’s Oncology Group (COG), which conducts the clinical trials that provide kids with cancer the best hope for a cure and improved therapies, has been cut by 30% (adjusted for inflation). Please support the FY2015 appropriations request of $5.26 billion for the NCI, as it will help fund childhood cancer research more fully. I also ask you to co-sponsor the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Reauthorization Act, which will help kids with cancer by expanding research, improving state registries, and funding a federal study to examine barriers to developing new therapies.
