Diagnosed on 12/01/2013 with Desmoplasic Round Small Cell Tumors, Ahmie, her family and her friends had to hit the ground running into a battle against an enemy that seem to have come from nowhere.  “Desmoplastic small-round-cell tumor or DSRCT is an aggressive and rare cancer that primarily occurs as masses in the abdomen.  Other areas affected may include the lymph nodes, the lining of the abdomen, diaphragm, spleen, liver, chest wall, skull, spinal cord, large intestine, small intestine, bladder, brain, lungs, testicles, ovaries, and the pelvis.   DSRCT is frequently misdiagnosed. Patients should always be referred to a sarcoma specialist. Since this is such an aggressive and fast moving form of cancer, treatments vary and there is currently no standard protocol for the disease.   Prognosis for DSRCT is poor and often depends upon the stage it is caught. “(Wikipedia.org) According to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, DRSCT has been reported fewer than 200 times within their walls.  Symptoms may include; pain or a lump in the abdomen, cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, trouble having a bowel movement and/or passing gas and abdominal swelling.

With this diagnosis, treatment had to begin immediately.  Ahmie endured many surgeries, multiple radiation treatments and what seemed like never ending rounds of chemotherapy.  Sharing their journey via www.youcaring.com, Ahmie’s mother Gienna spoke with a mixture of strength, fear, grace, gratitude and even a sense of humor during a time when laughter may have been hard to come by.  Simply joys seem to have more meaning.  While time never seems to be in high supply until you find yourself waiting in a medical lobby or hospital room.  The art of overcoming pain and waiting is not only focusing on the positive but hoping for the future.  Maybe it starts as something simple like a list of foods you cannot wait to not only be hungry for but can chow down on again without pause or care.  Perhaps the list expands to include friends and families to become the ultimate wish list.  Ahmie who began high school this year has an has ongoing wish list;

As of 11/07/2014 a big day arrived for Ahmie and her circle of love ones.  Ahmie was officially made a part of the palliative care services at Seattle’s Children Hospital.  Palliative care is a multi-disciplinary approach that includes specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, and stresses of a serious illness—whatever the diagnosis. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family.  The staff at Seattle’s Children Hospital has begun to come to Ahmie’s home for weekly labs, pain management and other services.  While extremely grateful for the additional help, Ahmie’s family is still trying to get another opinion on the tumor removals.  As a single mother of 2 growing girls, Gienna is asking for another type of help from the community.  With Ahmie’s daily needs, Gienna has not been able to work.  Medical and basic expenses are growing.  If you would like to know more about Ahmie’s journey or how you can help please visit http://www.youcaring.com/help-a-neighbor/operation-love-for-ahmie-miracles-for-ahmie-/114272 and https://www.facebook.com/miraclesforahmie/timeline.  Let’s make every moment count.  Together we CAN BEAT Childhood Cancer! Give to live!
